  21.    This diskette contains drivers and programs for Windows 3.1 users who
  22.    have a Sound Blaster 16.
  23.  
  24.    If you obtained the drivers and programs mentioned in this file as a ZIP
  25.    file from a bulletin board, please unzip the contents into a diskette
  26.    labeled

  50. III. Installing the drivers
  51. ---------------------------

  53.   Note: If your card does not have the Advanced Signal Processing chip,
  54.         skip steps 2-4.
  55.  
  56.    1. Copy all W*.ACV files to your \SB16\ACV\ sub-directory.  (If you do
  57.       not have a \SB16\ACV\ directory, make one with the command:
  58.       'md c:\sb16\acv [enter]'
  59.  
  60.    2. Copy all W*.CSP files to your \SB16\CSP\ sub-directory.  (If you do
  61.       not have a \SB16\CSP\ directory, make one with the command:
  62.       'md c:\sb16\csp [enter]'
  63.  
  64.    3. Copy the CSP.SYS file to your \SB16\DRV\ sub-directory
  65.  
  66.    4. Check your CONFIG.SYS to make sure you have the following line:
  67.       DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CSP.SYS
  68.  
  69.    5. Start Windows v3.1.
  70.    
  71.    6. Open the Control Panel and select the Drivers icon.
  72.  
  73.    7. At a minimum, you should have the following driver names in the
  74.       Installed Drivers list:
  75.  
  76.         MIDI Mapper
  77.         Timer
  78.         [MCI] CD Audio
  79.         [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  80.         [MCI] Sound
  81.  
  82.       If you have any Sound Blaster or Adlib drivers installed (other than the
  83.       ones listed above), please remove them with the REMOVE button and restart
  84.       Windows before continuing.  If any of these drivers are not listed,
  85.       please add them before continuing.  (See your Windows manual for details
  86.       on adding these drivers.)  Make sure you restart Windows after making
  87.       changes to the driver list.
  88.  
  89.    8. Click on the ADD button.
  90.  
  91.    9. Select Unlisted or Updated driver and click on OK.
  92.  
  93.   10. Insert the floppy containing the drivers.
  94.  
  95.   11. Type in the drive letter of the floppy drive containing the driver disk.
  96.  
  97.   12. Select Creative Sound Blaster Auxiliary Audio and click on OK.
  98.  
  99.   13. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.  The default
  100.       I/O address is 220H.  If you have changed the jumper on your card to
  101.       240H, 260H, or 280H, then select the one you changed.
  102.  
  103.   14. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  104.       DON'T RESTART, then repeat steps 8, 9, 10, and 11.
  105.  
  106.   WARNING! - Steps 15 and 16 will OVERWRITE your existing MIDIMAP.CFG
  107.          configuration.  If you want to keep your existing configuration,
  108.          click on CANCEL and make a copy of MIDIMAP.CFG before continuing
  109.          the installation process.
  110.  
  111.   15. Select Voyetra / Sound Blaster SuperSAPI FM Driver and click on OK.
  112.  
  113.   16. Windows will ask if you want to use the current SB16FM.DRV
  114.       or install the new SB16FM.DRV - Select NEW and continue on.
  115.  
  116.   17. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.
  117.       Repeat the instructions in step 13.
  118.  
  119.   18. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  120.       DO NOT RESTART, then repeat steps 8, 9, 10, and 11.
  121.  
  122.   19. Select Creative Sound Blaster Wave and MIDI and click on OK.
  123.  
  124.   20. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster Port address, MIDI address,
  125.       Interrupt, and DMA channel. Choose the settings your card is set to and 
  126.       continue on.

  128.   21. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  129.       RESTART.  Windows will then restart.
  130.

  132. IV. What to do if the drivers don't install correctly
  133. -----------------------------------------------------
  134.  
  135.    If you are having problems installing the drivers, here are some things to
  136.    check before you call Technical Support.  Also, be sure to read the
  137.    "Important Notes" section below.
  138.  
  139.    1. Check the size and date of all the driver files in the Windows SYSTEM
  140.       directory against the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  Make
  141.       sure that the correct drivers have been copied to your hard disk.
  142.  
  143.    2. Open the Driver applet in Control panel.  You should at least have the
  144.       following driver names in the Installed Drivers list:
  145.  
  146.         Creative Sound Blaster  Auxiliary Audio
  147.         Creative Sound Blaster  Wave and MIDI
  148.         MIDI Mapper
  149.         Timer
  150.         Voyetra / Sound Blaster SuperSAPI FM Driver
  151.         [MCI] CD Audio
  152.         [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  153.         [MCI] Sound
  154.  
  155.       If one or more of these drivers do not exist, you must install the
  156.       driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows
  157.       manual for more details).
  158.  
  159.    3. Check your SYSTEM.INI by choosing RUN from the File menu of the Program
  160.       Manager, and typing SYSEDIT in the command line box.  Examine the
  161.       [drivers] and [sndblst.drv] sections.  They should look something like
  162.       this:
  163.

  167.           Aux=sb16aux.drv
  168.           MIDI=sb16fm.drv
  169.           Wave=sb16snd.drv

  179.    4. If Windows refuses to install a device driver or you get the error
  180.       message "Device not found" when playing a Wave or MIDI file or a
  181.       CD, be sure you have the following settings in the [mci] section of
  182.       SYSTEM.INI
  183.  
  184.           [mci]
  185.           WaveAudio=mciwave.drv
  186.           Sequencer=mciseq.drv
  187.           CDAudio=mcicda.drv
  188.  
  189.       If one or more of these do not exist, you must install the driver(s)
  190.       using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows manual for
  191.       instructions).  Do not type in the entries into the SYSTEM.INI because
  192.       the files have to be installed into your SYSTEM directory by Windows.

  195. V. If you upgraded from Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1
  196. --------------------------------------------------
  197.  
  198.    If you upgraded an existing copy of Windows 3.0 or Windows 3.0 with
  199.    Multimedia Extensions to Windows 3.1, here are some special notes to
  200.    consider.
  201.  
  202.    1. If you have lines which read "device=vsbd.386" or "device=vadlibd.386"
  203.       in the [386Enh] section of SYSTEM.INI, please delete them.  These are old
  204.       drivers that have been replaced by VSBPD.386.  The new driver will not
  205.       work correctly until these lines have been removed.
  206.  
  207.    2. Delete the file SBPMIXER.CPL in the Windows SYSTEM directory.  It is no
  208.       longer being supported.  The new SBPMIXER.EXE is now used instead and is
  209.       loaded automatically when you install the Sound Blaster drivers.
  210.  
  211.    3. After installing Windows 3.1, verify that the latest SB16WMIX.EXE,
  212.       MMJBOX.EXE, SB16FM.DRV, SB16AUX.DRV and SB16SND.DRV have been copied to your
  213.       hard disk.  Check the size and date of these files against the listing
  214.       in the section "Diskette Contents".  You can delete any older versions
  215.       that you find in your system.

  218. VI. Important notes
  219. -------------------

  224.    1. The drivers found in the file CREATE.EXE on Microsoft's BBS and in the
  225.       Microsoft Forum on CompuServe are not the latest drivers for Windows 3.1
  226.       and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  227.  
  228.    2. The drivers that are included with the Windows 3.1 Resource Kit are not
  229.       the lastest drivers and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  230.  
  231.    3. We are including drivers that make use of Device Virtualization.  These
  232.       drivers will allow DOS Apps that use the Sound Blaster to run in Enhanced
  233.       Mode.
  234.  
  235.       Please make sure that a line reading "device=vsbpd.386" exists under the
  236.       [386Enh] section in your SYSTEM.INI.  If you have a line which reads
  237.       "device=vsbd.386", please delete it.  Also, make sure the file VSBPD.386
  238.       is in your Windows SYSTEM directory.  If it is not, copy it from the
  239.       Drivers Disk.
  240.  
  241.    4. The Windows 3.1 drivers can now be used in both Windows 3.0 with
  242.       Multimedia extensions as well as Windows 3.1.  They will check the
  243.       Windows version and use the correct Sound Blaster section name to access
  244.       the settings in the SYSTEM.INI.
  245.  
  246.    5. A MIDI-MAP has been created to make use of the SB16FM.DRV, please use the
  247.       MIDI MAPPER icon under Control Panel to customize it to your requirements.
  248.  
  249.       Under Windows 3.1, MIDI channel 10 is referenced as the drum channel.
  250.       If you are having problems with the FM synth not sounding "right", try
  251.       modifying the configuration with the MIDI Mapper.
  252.
